Are you drawn to a certain time in history, a decade or era that you wish you could’ve been a part of? I do. I look through pictures of 1920’s, a decade full of music and flappers, and wish that I could transport myself back in time.

I’ve always been fascinated with those flappers, women who gussied up to go to the local dance hall. I think as a kid, I dressed up as a flapper for 3 Halloweens in a row.

Even now, I try to mimic the flapper style. You know, the styled hair, red liptick, and T strap shoes. They lived a life to the max. Of course, after the roaring 20’s came the era of great depression, but they didn’t know any of that. They lived fearlessly at a time when America was really coming into her own.

Looking at the styles, you can see how fashion comes full circle. But it’s hard to capture the same glamor and elegance that those women had. Why? Because we see our bodies as instruments now, pieces to a bigger puzzle that we must perfect. Back then, your body was accepted as is. Big, small, it didn’t matter. And even going back further in time, the Romans and Greeks thought a woman with curves was the epitome of beauty.
I guess I am just wondering how our society became so enamored with the emaciated look that frequents our fashion magazines. Many look unhealthy, to the point of death even. Heroin-chic some say. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to look like a drug addict. I just want to go back to a time when culture and society appreciated a figure and curves. Not belittled it.

Very nice post. I, too, am intrigued with the ’20s. America’s music, jazz, really came into its own in that era. The sights, the sounds . . . I must have been amazing.
